Shopify Store Setup Checklist Before You Hit Launch
The things that decide whether a visitor completes an order or quietly leaves — checked in the order a customer meets them.
Most stores do not have a traffic problem. They have a first-six-seconds problem, and it is fixable before launch rather than after.
Before any product exists
- Decide the collection structure by how a customer shops, not how the business is organised internally.
- Agree the URL pattern early — changing it after you rank costs you.
- Set up the domain, not the myshopify test address.
Products carry the sale
- One image that shows the thing, one that shows scale or use, one that shows detail.
- Sizes, materials and measurements written out. "Please message for details" loses the order.
- Variants named the way people say them.
- Stock behaviour and backorder rules decided before someone is promised a date.
The path to paying
- Cart and checkout tested on a phone with a real address and a real card, not a simulation.
- Shipping costs visible before the cart, not revealed at payment.
- Payment methods that the market actually uses — UPI and cards, not cards alone.
- COD rules written plainly if you offer it.
Trust pages, written before launch
Returns and exchanges, shipping timelines, contact details with a number someone answers, and a physical address. These are the pages a hesitant buyer opens last and decides on.
If a customer has to work out whether they can return something, they will not buy it today.
Launch day, in order
1. Place one real order end to end and fulfil it yourself. 2. Confirm the confirmation email and WhatsApp reach the customer. 3. Check analytics and the search-console connection. 4. Test the site on mobile data, not only wifi. 5. Then start spending on traffic.
What to leave for later
Bundles, loyalty, reviews apps, multi-currency and a redesign. Each is worth doing once orders arrive. None of them matter while the basics are leaking.
